Hardening & Tempering
Two body-hardening methods — including one of the largest induction units in North America and gas-fired furnaces to 1700 mm.
SFS has two body-hardening methods: Dual-Frequency Progressive Induction Hardening, and Multi-zone Microprocessor-controlled Gas-Fired Hardening.
Five dual-coil progressive induction-hardening units provide frequency combinations of 60/100, 60/600 and 600 cycles — one of which is the largest in North America, with capacity to 1140 mm diameter × 7620 mm overall length. All work rolls and some smaller back-up rolls are hardened on these induction units. Two cryogenic quenching units rapidly cool the roll to −85 °C using liquid nitrogen, allowing the maximum reduction of retained austenite for the highest possible hardness.
SFS also has three Selas gas-fired furnaces with a maximum diameter capacity of 1700 mm. Multiple quenching stations provide radial water, air, mist and forced-air quenching. Coupled with multiple tempering cycles, SFS can establish the ideal microstructure to meet the rolling conditions of back-up rolls in the mill environment.
Through SFS' advanced refining, hardening, quenching and tempering techniques, our finished rolls meet the customer's hardness requirements and achieve the deepest hardness layer with optimal hardness uniformity.
