Behind the work rolls, back-up rolls carry the load — and the bigger the mill, the more that load punishes a roll that was not forged right. We finish back-up rolls up to 1700 mm (67 inches) in diameter with weights in excess of 70 metric tons (154,000 pounds), among the largest forged rolls made in the region.
That scale only means something if the metallurgy holds up through the full section. Single-ladle melting, vacuum degassing and 100% bottom pouring keep inclusions out and the structure sound all the way to the core, and controlled forging and heat treatment do the rest.
